Italian football was born in the late 19th century: English mariners staying in Genoa harbour started to play football.

In 1893 some English gentlemen founded Genoa Cricket and Foot-Ball Club, maybe the first Italian football team. In 1898 the FA was founded and 43 days later the first Italian Championship was played in Turin (8 May). There were only 4 teams: Internazionale Torino, Ginnastica Torino, Genoa and U.S. Torinese.

The Italian National side are now among the giants of international football, winning the World Cup in  in 1934, 1938, 1982 and just losing on a penalty shootout in 1994.

Italy's governing body is the Lega Nazionale Professionisti It organises two leagues (serie A, 18 teams, and serie B, 20) and Italian Cup . Serie A is said to be the best league in the world, that every footballer dreams to play in
