Fantasy Sports, where the owning and managing of sports teams is simulated or the performance of the team is calculated on the basis of the performance real players, began in 1980 with Rotisserie league baseball was invented  by Dan Okrent, a New York writer and editor.  The name "Rotisserie" comes from Manhattan's La Rotisserie Francaise restaurant, where the resulting Rotisserie League Baseball Association or (RLBA), regularly met. The Rotisserie method of assessing  the performance of teams is well researched.   The number of Baseball Rotisserie Leagues mushroomed and other sports soon followed, with American Football, Basketball,  Hockey, Nascar, Formula 1, Golf and Soccer being the most popular.

There are no overall organising bodies, as these are mostly commercial games, but there is a  fantasy Sports Players Association (FSPA) representing the  leading fantasy sports companies and institutions
