The Orange Bowl began as the Palm Festival in 1933 in Florida. Floridians wanted to drive tourism into South Florida during the depression. They saw the popularity and success of the Rose Bowl and parade in California and decided to do the same thing. On New Years day in 1935 the Palm Festival became the Orange Bowl Festival with it first official game staring the University of Miami and Bucknell University. That day Bucknell defeated Miami 26-0, but a new Florida tradition was born.
Under the direction of the Orange Bowl committee, The Orange Bowl Festival has since grown to be Florida's largest tourist attraction. Florida hosts more than 150,000 visitors during the now month-long celebration annually which includes the famous football game, other sports games, entertainment, parties, and community events.
