It took a team of Phoenix area business men over 3 years in get a BCS bowl game in Arizona, but in December of 1971 their hard work and perseverance paid off. The first Fiesta Bowl was on December 27, 1971 and featured the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Florida State Seminoles. The Devils burned the Seminoles 45-38 and a Fiesta Bowl took its place among the college football Bowl Championship Series. The Fiesta Bowl is now one of four bowl games that rotate to hold the Bowl Championship game each year. The rotation includes the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl.

Since it's inaugural game, the Fiesta Bowl has been held at Sun Devil Stadium, the home of the Arizona State Sun Devils, in Tempe, Arizona. In 2007 the Fiesta Bowl will make a move. A new chapter in bowl history will begin in Cardinals Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The new stadium will be the home of the Arizona Cardinals NFL Football team and other large events like the Fiesta Bowl. The stadium will hold a record over 63,000 seats. In the same year, the BCS Championship game will be separated from the 4 bowl games that rotate the rights to hold it currently. The Fiesta Bowl will be played and then will hold the Championship game as well.
