PGA The Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) began in 1916 in New York City. The game of golf was becoming increasingly popular and many players were anxious to promote it more. Rodman Wanamaker established the first official meeting of the PGA on April 10th of that same year with 35 initial members. Since that day the PGA has grown to a network of 41 regions, that provides “grass-roots” support to 25 million amateur golfers and 28,000 professional members. The organization assists golfers of all types with divisions for amateurs, professionals, seniors and juniors. One of many annual activities ran by the PGA is the PGA Championship. The first PGA Championship was held October 10-14th 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. It was exactly 6 months to the day after the birth of the organization. In the end James M. Barnes won the trophy and $2,580. The next two years the Championship game was cancelled because of Word War I, but in 1919 the game resumed and James Barnes won his second title. Even though professionals and amateur golfers have been competing since 1895, the PGA TOUR we know today, only officially begun in 1968. That is when the “Tournament Players Division” of the PGA of America broke off as a new, independent organization. The TOUR hired Joseph C. Dey as its first commissioner. US Open 2007 The final round is always played on the 3rd Sunday of June (Father's Day) Wikipdia Winning the US Open is one of golf's greatest achievements. Each June amateur and professional players alike complete four days of 18-hole rounds of golf in the quest to win this event. In the over 100 years of its existence, it has become a sort of "World Golf Championship". Horace Rawlins won the introductory US Open on Rhode Island's Newport Golf and Country Club course in 1895. Then it was not as popular as it is today. As a matter of fact, that first tournament was postponed because the more popular event, the America's Cup yacht races, was scheduled at the same time. Since then the event has evolved in many ways including format. Tickets to attend the US Open where first sold in 1922 and today they are a highly desired commodity. Masters Golf Tournament 2007 5th - 8th April The Masters has grown to become the most prestigious tournament in all of Golf. On March 22, 1934 Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts decided to hold an annual golf tournament in honour of golf's greatest players. Early on it was called the The Augusta National Invitation Tournament. It wasn't until 1939 that the event became known as The Masters. The Masters paved the way for modern golf tournaments. They instituted many rules that are still in use today. The tournament would be held over 4 days rather than three. They eliminated qualifying rounds, and only limited access to the playing area for players and caddies only. Since 1940 the Masters has always been held the first week of April at the Augusta National Golf Club.
