Baseball World Series
Traditionally held in October, this "fall classic" event is the climax of the
Major League Baseball (MLB) season , a best of 7 games between the
"Pennant" winners of the National League and the American League playoffs. Each playoff matches the top 4 teams in each league after the regular season schedule has been completed.
Precursor to the oddly named World Series were simply exhibition matches dating back as early as the 1880s between the National League (NL) and the American Association League.
The first World Series game as such, between the new American League (AL) and the NL, was in 1903 between the Pittsburgh Pirates (NL) and the AL champions, Boston Pilgrims.
MLB All Star Game
It has been said that the MLB All Star game is the most watched and therefore most popular All-Star game of professional sports. The last MLB All Star game received over 100 million fans watching on television or listening by radio. Each year the game is played by the best players from the National League and the American league and has been a staple of the baseball season since 1933. The first All Star game was held on July 6, 1933. Start time was 1:15pm in Chicago's Comiskey Park. In this game the American league won 4-2. Players from the first game included such greats as Babe Ruth. Not only do fans love the All Star game but hosting cities do as well. The game drives an estimated $30 to $70 million dollars each year to the host city, which has a large finical impact.
The MLB All-Star game events also include the famous Home Run Derby. The tradition has been around for awhile but was officially recognized as the Home Run Derby in 1985. Each year 8 to 10 players get a chance to hit as many home runs as they can before they reach 10 outs. The top hitters then advance to the next two rounds to determine the champion.
